Aleksandar Matanovic was born in Belgrade in 1930. Pursuing careers in both chess and journalism, he was awarded the title of Chess Grandmaster in 1955. Matanovic has won many international tournaments and competed in several World Championship Zonals and Interzonals. Three times Yugoslav Champion, he has won 12 medals at the Chess Olympics while a member of the Yugoslav team, later moving into chess politics and becoming FIDE Executive Deputy President between 1990 and 1994. In 1982 Matanovic received the prestigious "7th July award", the highest State honour given by the Republic of Serbia.
