"The walnut is from over 100 years old Virginia farmer´s barn. When cutting some of the pieces for the table, I ran into a bullet, they where completely encased in the wood. I talked to the guy I got it from and the best we could figure the barn got shot by moonshiners or maybe it came from the civil War. In any event the walnut is outstanding and a work of art by itself. Lots of red and grey streaks, a little bit blue too, to go along with some really pretty brown colours. Some of the walnut pieces show that color. The pear wood is something I got sold on when I first started making these. It´s akin to boxwood, but it takes a pretty patina almost immediately after the finish is applied making them look really old, antique-like. All my pearwood came from one tree in Illinois, outside of Chicago., cut down especially for me about 6 years ago, I had to sit and just look at it for the first 5 years. There is no one else in the world that I know of that uses pearwood besides me. Pearwood was the premier choice for wood chess pieces back in the 1700´s in Europe. Not sure if the pearwood died out from draught, or over use, but its been forgotten until now. The pearwood king is made right off the aged heartwood and has some great grain features! The pieces are weighted very well, but the kings and queens are like quadruple weighted, very heavy and feel fantastic when you lift them."
