Fabiano Caruana became a grandmaster in 2007 at the age of 14 and quickly climbed the rating ranks, eventually reaching the third highest Elo rating of all time at 2844 in 2014. On the way he produced one of the greatest tournament wins of all time at the 2014 Sinquefield Cup: Starting with seven consecutive wins, he finished in clear first with a staggering 8½/10, ahead of World Champion Magnus Carlsen by 3 points. In 2018, he won the Candidates tournament in Berlin, earning the right to challenge Carlsen for the World Championship. Although he narrowly lost that match he remains the number two player in the world.
